About Gunlock
Gunlock Reservoir
Gunlock is located about 15 miles northwest of sunny St. George. It was established on the Old Spanish Trail so residents could trade with people traveling on the trail. The name “Gunlock” is the nickname of the community’s founder, Gunlock Will, (William Hamblin), who was a sharpshooter and skillful in repairing gunlocks, which are the firing mechanisms for muzzle loaders. Each July Gunlock hosts its own rodeo that draws contestants from all over the state.
In this scenic red rock country, lays the 240-acre Gunlock State Park & Reservoir, a sparkling blue lake where year-round boating, watersports and quality fishing for bass and catfish attract visitors. Gunlock Reservoir dam was constructed in 1970 for irrigation water and flood control. Facilities include boat launching ramp and pit privies.

In March of 2011 Gunlock saw several professional road bicycle racers compete on a grueling 40 to 80 plus mile road race! The racers were training and competing at such a high level of enthusiasm and excitement. The weather was cool, especially for the spectators and some moisture was felt.
